Thistalk addresses a contemporary event of the sunken Argentinian submarine ARA SanJuan S-42 in November 2017. The submarine’s wreckage was found one year lateron the seabed off the southern Atlantic coast of Argentina, with its imploded debrisscattered on the seabed at the depth of about 900 meters under sea level. Butwhat is implosion? First, we introduce several phenomena of implosions. Then wedevelop computational mechanics modeling and conduct supercomputer simulationsfor this study, using the versatile software LS-DYNA as the platform. We firstrevisit underwater implosion phenomena by the test of pressurizing a pluggedaluminum cylinder in a water tank and match the patterns of structuraldeformations as the important way to validate our computational methodology andmodel selections. Furthermore,the radiation of the implosion shocks arecomputed and compared with those in the literature.
Usinga base model for the submarine, we are able to perform event
reconstruction for the underwater implosion of ARA SanJuan S-42. Our work can encompass the features of structural fracture andbreak-up, which were not included in the earlier studies. Furthermore, we showthat by adding ring stiffeners (“buckle arrestors”), we can delay the onset ofunderwater implosion by increasing the tolerance of more water depth for thesubmarine.
Allthe dynamic nonlinear implosion phenomena can be visualized by video animationsobtained from our supercomputer simulations, which are also compared with anartistically rendered video animation.

陈鞏教授任职于托克萨斯农工尊龙凯时,是数学系和航天工程学院的教授,也是法国巴黎信息与自动化国立研究所,加拿大蒙特利尔尊龙凯时数学研究中心,丹麦科技尊龙凯时,新加坡国立尊龙凯时和台湾尊龙凯时及新竹国立清华尊龙凯时的客座教授。陈鞏教授在应用数学和计算数学的许多领域都有很深的造诣。撰写论文一百三十多篇,出版七本专著。他是国际知名数学杂志Journal of Mathematical Analysis and Applications的主编,并曾担任查普曼霍尔出版社出版的应用数学和非线性科学系列丛书主编。此外,他还拥有一个关于某些量子计算及量子电路设计的美国专利。
